February workshops offer introduction to learning tools and accessibility resources
An app that makes learning a game, tips that can help make course materials more accessible and a new series of workshops designed for academic support staff are just a few of the offerings available in February from the Innovative Learning Team.
Throughout the spring semester, the Innovative Learning Team is hosting a series of professional development events designed to help faculty learn about instructional technology on campus. Faculty and instructional staff can find a full listing of offerings online, but February offerings include:
Academic Support Technology Series: Tuesdays in February
A new series of educational workshops is designed to help academic support staff learn to use classroom technologies to create accessible documents, set up web conferences, develop online surveys, and more. This series will take place every Tuesday in February and attendees can sign up to attend one or all of the sessions.
Passport basics (competency badges): Feb. 5
An introduction to Passport, Purdue’s system for awarding badges based on user skills, knowledge and competencies. Learn how to manage a Passport group, create challenges, develop a rubric and create your own badge.
Introduction to Classroom Accessibility: Feb. 7
Provides an overview of accessibility policies, challenges and resources at Purdue, as well as important steps to take to ensure that classrooms are accessible. Topics include document formatting, video captioning, creating alt-texts and responding to student accommodation requests.
Introduction to Replay (gamified quizzing app): Feb. 11
Replay is an app that provides a quizzing environment for students with elements of gameplay. Instructors can create questions using text, images or video that students answer to score points. Students can retake quizzes to improve their score, earn achievements, or work their way up the class leaderboard. This workshop will cover how to create quizzes and collect results for assessment.
Accessible Web Design Basics: Feb. 26
Learn about Purdue’s accessibility standards and guidelines, and how to create and test a website for accessibility in a graphical environment. Attendees should have some experience creating and managing their own websites before attending.
Active Learning Community of Practice: Feb. 26
The Active Learning Community of Practice is a monthly meeting where faculty interested in learning more about active learning strategies can gain insight, create community and share ideas with each other. All faculty interested in engaging students in active learning are welcome.
